So I shaped him this:

Where next? After Vancouver,maybe right here. The strongest-yet southern hemi popped in right about the same time I got back in town ( I wish it showed up a week early!). While I've had no time to partake (paying off for Travel Fun), I'm sure some local feedback will arrive. I'm planning on sloppy seconds at the end of the week (before Carmageddon).

Seeing this, I knew I had a source of inspiration. The Duke knew all about being a high-gravity guy. So I talked to Him about a high-gravity-dude pig.
The Duke and I both agreed. After all, we're both practical, hands-on guys. We needed a high-gravity dude to help us accomplish the mission...

...one with really high-gravity eyebrows. Truely outsized to all normal Human expectations.

Obviously, high-gravity guys need oversized components on their equipment...

9'10: 18 x 23 x 17. A true pig template, but gone high-gravity. 3 1/4" thick, so all is proportional. We added concave to the nose, 'a la Dave Sweet. D-fin. Duh. No model name, as of yet- but there will be- all model names here show up after all cosmetic/behavioral inputs show up...good, and bad, like life.

Grey Cutter? Fog Lady?

Sometime, in the age of Roswell UFOs (around 1960), some alien dropped down to Cali on the down-low (instead of New Mexico), and started to surf Rincon. Sometime, in the last couple of years, I snuck into Area 51 and grabbed the vibe of this totally alien pig water-craft. Also on the down-low. It is totally un-authorized, so no-way am I calling it by it's Alien name; I was seeing nothing like it out there, in the 21st century pig-now, and when things I found on the Alien craft solidified the not-quite-solid things that I was trying to put into the Fog Cutter, I started taking notes on the Alien Spacecraft- so I could fill in the blanks- some parts I got right, by myself, some parts went where I didn't dare tread by myself. So far, normal Human folks have liked the results...
... But I'm totally willing to make the original, lower gravity planet-version for any brave gravity-traveler.

I don't know what's more Alien- Johnny (on right), who can throw more hair-dos in one month than I can in a year (total hair-envy on my part), or the modified Grey-thing on the left- at 22'' wide, it is already wider by almost a half-inch from the Original, but the template, rocker, and, most important, the bottom and rail thickness is true to what I saw at Roswell. This board (already sold): 9'5 X 22" wide, 3"-and-a bit thick (like most of this board's contemporaries). But you don't have to deal with an Alien if you live on the Right Coast- Mollusk Brooklyn has a 9'5 coming, without a Hairy Ogre in the Box.... You guys are Stoked, the Chicks are bummed...

I get serious road-rage when I see solid glass D-fins. I've foiled many a fin, and, when it comes to D-fins, the weight difference is ENORMOUS! So, I had to bite the bullet and make my own wood-core fins, just to lose two pounds off the tail. At least they look kinda cool, as well.

I have absolutely no clue who She is, nor do I particularly care. I just know that this is an
aesthetically perfect union of board and human. It didn't hurt that I pulled up this picture
while a certain song was playing on my WinAmp- the almost impossible-to-find Black Album live version of "Smash It Up" by the Damned. One of those right-place/right-time kind of situations.
So I give you both, but not quite: This is the link to the '82 gig of the Damned at the Whiskey A Go-Go- they screw up righteously through the whole song, but at least Captain Sensible is naked. He wasn't when the Damned played at Godzilla's in the Valley in 1981.

A Little Piece Of What We'd All Love To See Again

I finally reconnected with my friends in Portland. This was kind of important to me, as I needed a half-way crash-pad on my coming board-delivery road trip to Tofino, B.C. Now it's not only Kellen, but Schueyler and Aaron as well. Aaron sent me this "ideal Surf Shop" photo from his new digs up in fog-land. The longboards are probably Gene's , but something of mine might be up there. Plus a shortboard or two from the revitalized (right on!) shaping of Bob Hurley.
All I can say, is whoever's boards are in this shop, they deserve to be there.
This quiver is going to be added to: Aaron needs some more foam for the jumble-beef of northern waters, so it means that not all the boards I'm hauling up are going to B.C.- some are short-shipping to Portland.

A New Twin Fin Hull- the MP-MR

Well, fairly new- a couple have been mumbling around dark alleys for
close to year now, but it's out of the bag now, since Sacred Craft.

Basically, as the name implies: the basic vibe of my MP, but combined to a genuine twin-fin
(as opposed to a fish) fin set-up. It's kind of a natural- the non-kick tail rocker of the MP, that many found stiff, is perfect for a twin setup. In fact, it's the same for both my standard MP, and a 1979
MR twin up in my rafters.

The similarity to a Lost Fish, template-wise, is obvious. It's my standard MP nose, same rate of curve as the MP, into a slightly narrower tail.
This one is 6'1; 17" x 20 1/2" x 14 3/4". The narrower tail allowed me to lose some center width ( I had to, actually, to keep the hull-turn pivot forward where it needs to be), compared to the single fin MP. It's a lot faster rail to rail, but I'm sure that the twin set-up is doing that, and not the 3/8" less width.

I'm having the best luck with these fins from 101 Fin Co., but I need to try some genuine full sized
upright twins- all the current ones on the market are too small- smaller than the original MR twins.

The point, of course, is to get some Hull Humm
off the front end. So far, it seems to Close the Deal.

9'0'' PHD HOT GENERATION

Myself on the 9'0'' HG , Brian and I keep getting calls from the guy's who have got these, and they really like these boards , me too!

Good paddler , just glides in , really has a nice hull feel to it, also everybody says it cuts back so easy , it's that big hip in the back.

You can step up on the front third and pump it thru turns.

The 9'o'' just finished , Brian , Flo and I went into the shaping room with Brian we had a 5 min discussion and Brian just says, out of the way boys I got this one. Right when this picture was taken I knew I would have to have it.

Brian just about done, so far I have had it in beachbreak , reef, and pointbreaks, all fun so far. Next we are gonna see how short it can go, Brians already done 7'4'' and maybe some longer than 9'0''.

The Maple Bar is Back!

The Creepy. The modified maple bar- still one of the finest small wave noseriders around. You can still get chuckles up Santa Barbara way if you mention Seth Rinaldi on Creepy #1 in 4'-5' low tide Rincon and getting his socks knocked off four out of five waves- but that fifth wave! Of course, the legend was made in waves 1/2 to a third that size.

The SYT-P (P for Pig)

This board is based off the mid-eight foot balsa Quiggs. The template is right-on, ditto the bottom contour and thickness distribution. I've made the rocker somewhat friendlier. It carries what I call "golf ball" rails; I reduce the volume going into the rail, then round it out. This way you lose the cork, but get a very forgiving and neutral rail. This one is at the Mollusk in Venice- there's another at Val Surf in NoHo.
This one is 8'6 x 3", 16 x 21 5/8 x 16.
I've set the box well back, at 3 1/2" off the tail block. This accommodates either a correctly placed "D" fin, or an upright rectangle, such as the 10" Lightweight shown below, for a snappier ride. The bottom of the board has good roll throughout, with a flattened speed zone in the nose.

Went into the room with Brian and Florian yesterday and we have been thinkin about makin a 9'0'' Hot Generation.

It's 9'0'' but not really a longboard, it should really lay over on the rail like a Hull/ V- bottom, Jesus my hair is almost as white as the foam!

Brian had a plan and it just went together great .

2 hrs later , after it was done Flo and I were just tryin to figure out how we were gonna sneak a new board by the wives. Im gonna have to have this one.

When we first got in the room I ask Brian a ? he just said KP shut up and watch I got this one, cool when a plan comes together.

I went by Brian's to check out this D fin made after Yaters Gray Lady, came out nice, going to Mollusk S.F.

I have ridin Yaters Gray Lady ( I got in a shit load of trouble from Renny for it, but it was worth it! ) and it was the best D fin I've ever got my feet on.

This one is Kyle Albers SOS , I loaned Kyle my original and after that he had to have one.

After seeing this one I ordered a copy , my OG is pretty old, 14 yrs now.

3 of my favorite boards, 9'4'' SOS , 8'4'' PR 68 and 7'6'' VEINTO.

These have been refined over many years by myself and Matt Miller, with influence by Nat Young , Wayne Lynch, Ted Spencer, Greg Liddle, Greenough, Paul Gross and Brian Hilbers.

The 7'6'' and 8'4'' and made for all types of surf, good in beachbreaks , reef and points, they both have a rolled V under your back foot with the last bit behind the box going back to flat for punch. I love them in junk surf. The SOS 9'4'' is a long quest for the ultimate Yater Spoon type longboard hull, step back on the hip, up to the trim spot and hold on. Sacred Craft in Ventura

Scott Bass put on another fine show in Ventura. It was great to see all those spoons, since it was Rennie's weekend.
As they used to say in Mad Magazine, the usual gang of idiots manning the booth. I don't know where Scott Anderson was when I had the camera out. The big vibe was still about the Hot Generation- that board is going places. I'm working now
on a Little Hot- the same treatment, but around 7'0.

Stringerless MP (almost)

Surfblanks America cooked me up this blank, and, since I personally know the MP really well, I used it for one, shaped as close as makes a difference to my old trusty 6'3 MP.
The idea is to have a really rigid, positive fin response, while the board can flex and rebound during true hull turns- pretty much emphasizing what I want an MP to do, anyway. Glassed with one layer, top and bottom, of 6 oz. Volan flatweave. An excellent job, by the way, by Gino at Aqua Tech- not a trace of twist.

Here's a close-up of where the stringers end. They taper, by the way. That's a Paul Gross 9.0 that's in the box. While I normally like a bit more base, with consequently more drive, I've heard on the Old Boy network that this fin really works well in MPs, so I'm gonna give it a try. Eat your heart out, Sam George!

The newest addition to the twin fin lineup. While it looks superficially similar to the P-38 and Richard Kenvin's Caspers, it has a lot off different stuff going on, mainly in the rocker. Think skateboard for the water- really pumpable, with a lot of front-to-back weight shift potential. The front end still has a genuine, deep-entry hull, but it's mainly there for wave entry and trim line, rather than to turn off of. Fuller rail volume for a poppy, lively feel.
Notice the fins are a lot farther forward- also a new template, with a one-side foil. Both more hold, and more slide potential, depending on how you weight on 'em. More user control, either way.
This one pictured is 5'0 X 22 3/4". They don't have to be this small, but you get the idea.

These are pulled from Children of the Sun from N.Z., this one is Wayne Parkes , tryin to show this era just went by too fast. Its great to go back and refine these boards with better rockers , foils and fins = FUN !

My Little Bastard

This is my new personal Little Bastard. I made it a bit big, 6'3, to match the size of my beloved MP, so I can make a head-to-head comparison of the two.
Very MP-like, but it carries the Bad Acid bottom through the hull (you can just see the double concave in the pic below). Also, it has a taste of tail kick, coordinated with the front fins. Notice it's a widowmaker setup, 2+1, rather than the in-line 1+2 of the MP and GeeBee. Also, a new dedicated sidebite template, in Volan, made for me by Larry at Fibreglas Fin Co. One of the new PHd flex templates by Marlin at 101 in the middle. This is the hooky guy, the BJ/Foley, that really throws some good punch in the MP.

8'4'' PHD PUERTO RICO 68

Brian shaped this for me its a design Ive ridden since 1994, its like the boards Wayne Lynch , Nat and Ted Spencer rode in Evolution and the end of the film the Hot Generation. This is one of my favorite boards, it works in a lot of waves , points , beachbreaks, junksurf allaround user friendly hull.

The template has alot of curve and the rocker is relaxed just a bit in the right spot so its works really well backside.

Lots of foam on the S- deck, paddles well for an 8'4''.

The nose is slightly pulled and that curve in the back really helps the board go from rail to rail, also a rolled V right in front of the fin box , this board solves alot of problems with bigger hulls.

Very Small, and not so Very Small

This is a new ride for Tim Caton, down SD way- a 4'11 Paipo, shown here on top of a GeeBee for scale. It's around 21 1/2" wide, 1 3/4" thick. More or less a Velo tail- I used a GeeBee nose template, rather than the rounder Velo, to reduce spray flying into his prone mug. In spite of the thinness, we'll just have to wait and see if it flexes much- it's mighty short.

This is Eric's 8'0 Microant- it's going back home with him to Byron Bay. Nick's authentic GeeBee-looking GeeBee is in the background.

Bamboo Flexies Ready to Roll

Marlin's fine work at 101 fins is just about ready to roll. True to PHD philosophy, we wanted to give these fins a thorough test before letting them out.
The overall vibe is a smoother turn, that's really easy to initiate. Above are two shorter fins, pretty much designed for shorter hull hybrids, such as LS Eggs, MPs, and Little Bastards. On shorter boards, the lack of fin weight is really noteable. The fin on the left is the BJ-Foley 8.25. I based this off a Jay Foley template from Yater Pocket Rocket days. Doesn't feel as extreme as it looks-
nothing like a Norm-Flex. The fin on the right is a 8.5 MP. Both these fins utilize a "hinge flex", with
the last 1/4 of the fin designed to flex like a paddle. The zing this gives the fin on hard turns and,
when pumping down the line, is really noticeable. We're also putting out the PHD-1, shown below
in fiberglass, with a conventional taper flex.

This is a Volan in the PHD-1 template. 9.1". Notice the foil- the pivot is moved forward on the fin,
compared to Greg's templates, obviously a different template, the same flex pattern as the L-Flexes.
This is proving to be a killer fin in hardman hulls, but really shines in the more steerable hulls. It's a perfect Egg fin, and worth a checkout in Marc Andrieni's Vaqueros.

Brian and I have talked about this one for awhile, influenced by the film The Hot Generation and surfing of Ted Spencer and Nat Young. This era went by so fast its fun to redo these designs but with better rockers, foils and fins, this one is a Putnam/Hilbers 8'4'' lots of hip in the back and a nice straight spot on the trim sweet spot

Better foil than the old ones thinner tail and S-deck

Velo- influenced tail. Think wipit like Ted off that tail curve and step up to sweet spot and burn.

This little beast is a Fineline model of Brians , a Zombie 8'0'' like the early V-bottoms, but with better rocker and foil, this stuff should be at Sacred Craft show

Just a quick note, with no eye candy...
I just dropped off an arctail, 5'8, P-38 at Mitch's in Solana Beach as a general rider/demo. I dropped off a number of sellers, also, including a 7'0 Finequero, a couple of GeeBees, a Dirty Sanchez P-38,
as well as a board I'm riding myself: a hulled quadfish- quad hull? No, I think a hulled QF is a better description, even if it's a roundtail, and not a fishtail. Sorry, my personal 5'11 already got borrowed, so, again, no eye candy. Check out Shelter's site- I customed one for Josh with those guys' input, and I think it's posted.
I've gotten so much: "Where can I try one?", about the P-38; here's a southern answer. A northern answer would be to contact Mike Adams at Val Surf in humble, inland NoHo, Ca.; he has a 5'7 that we
agreed could possibly go elsewhere, although you have to negotiate with him, not me. H3K.

Marlin and 101 Fins Rule!

Fins, as a rule, get seriously taken for granted. Hull goons, among others, have always paid attention- shape, flex, placement. In the on-going tune of the P-38, and its morphing side project, the Dirty Sanchez, I've been looking at fins to complete the tune of these sleds. On hearing that some slide was happening on some P-38s, I looked at lack of flex as a possible answer. In a long phone jive with Marlin at 101 Fin Co., he helped me sort out some issues, suggested other solutions, and generally expressed an interest in what was going on with my boards that normally only I and the owner would be expected to have. Combined with a touchy-feely session at last May's Sacred Craft show, my concepts of flex foiling combined with
some great template ideas from Marlin to produce some fins I'm really jazzed about. The above is
a DU fin, modded over the phone, for the Dirty Sanchez. Higher, tighter, way more flex.
These suckers will give the D.S. both more fish pivot
as well as more hull spring and drive.
On the arctailed, true blue P-38, I'd initially foiled my own fins from a birchply/fiberglass laminate. These rocked on my board, and on others. Marlin came up with a mod that virtually
imitates how my birchply fins behave.

It's amazing how much more flex and punch we can put into a fin with a seedy extra quarter inch, but that's what's going down, and it's all on Marlin. Thanks, Dude!

Check out this yellowfin nugget. I'm seeing a personal parabolic in this fin's future. The flex is immaculate.

I'm calling this the SYT. It's a Quigg hotcurl template, hulled and foiled into
a mini carver and glider. It should have plenty of both, so it's set up with a real comfy rocker. Think small longboard, rather than big hull. This one is 8'6, 16 1/2 x 21 5/8 x 16, 2 7/8 thick. A bit o' spoon, and a softer hull rail for ease of steering and a more neutral feel.

A 9'4 SOS. This one is Brooklyn bound.

A skinnier Dirty Sanchez. Ramped hull to concave tail, a bit more pivotal tail rail to coordinate with the twin fin. 5'9, 18 1/4 x 22 x 18. I know the hull part works; this guy carries a bit more curve into the tail
to give it a bit fishier aspect. No rocker mods- if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

This ones a is a copy of my best longboard ever, its got a sweet spot about foot and a half back from the nose , when you hit that spot you better get ready, it will just take off without you, Very true to Nat Youngs 66 Gordon/Woods world contest board, Sam, but just tweeked here and there where Brian and I thought we could improve it, PROPS to Yater, Liddle and Paul Gross for the refining of this design over the years .

Cornwall Calling- Hulls from the wrong side of the tracks

The Canaries totally remind me of southern Baja- just as Portugal reminds me of north Baja.

And Cornwall reminds me of here, during the spring.
But that doesn't keep this from being a fine, swoopy carving turn.

My bud Alex lives in Devon, Cornwall; he got bit by the Humm Bug around a year and a half ago.
These guys evade the stormy winter blues with trips to the Canaries- apparently worthwhile, as the photos show. But back at home and back in the wetties, it looks like the Humm is still there. Hey, Alex- what fin did you put in you Geebee after the first one snapped? Geebee in the gloom, MP in the glory.

Brian and I have been workin on this for awhile , its Baby surfboard inspired , a board Greenough shaped in 1965 out of balsa , nose kick added by Mctavish later , ridin by guys that surfed with George, Nat, Bob M. Russel Hughes and many others . Its fun to bring shapes like this back and add tweeks here and there to see if we can come up with something FUN!!

Brian and I did this as a new project, its an 8'1'' PHD Jaws influenced board , added a bit more rocker to fit in less than ideal conditions, but the straighter template gives it that nice drive out of turns. Think , dropin , bank it over , pull up, take a step up on the sweet spot and let it go thru the gears.

Those were a couple of the first Putnam/ Hilbers boards.

I'm stoked with this guy. It's a modded MP template, full front-end hull,
same tail rail play as the MP. I added a tad more tail rocker than normal-
after all, thrusters do really thrust, so I'm letting the fins give the drive.

This is my new personal basier-wave equalizer. Biggest thing in my quiver below bona-fide longboard status.The color job has a history all it's own- get me drunk enough and it's a good story. Andreini claims the Vs are "no-noses"; he's sorta right,
I guess; This guy sits on a 15 7/8" tail, with an inch narrower nose and a 21 1/2" base width. I like
the widowmaker setup on these guys- it helps to drive the thicker/wider tail. Duck-divable with real hull swoop on the right-place turn. BJ

They went down right smooth, and some more bottles helped to
assuage our grief over the terrible surf at the Rincon do a couple of
weekends back. After a couple of Johnyy's smooth draughts at
9:30 in the morning, even the Tecates tasted good.

PHd- Putnam/Hilbers Designs, that is,
is up and going at last, and we're ready to spring
some evil hulls onto an unsuspecting world.
The Story: over the years and years of riding hulls, Kirk, myself,
and our hull-riding hardcore cronies,
have ended up having "keepers" in our quivers- boards
that just seemed to do things different, or better, or were just plain fun
in a lot of conditions. Most by now aren't even in ridable condition-
they're more like heirlooms. So KP and I decided to crack a few
out and replicate them before they turned into dust.
Basically, I start by cloning an old board, then KP and I go over it,
amend what we feel to be flaws, glass the sucker, test ride it
to see if it really works the way it's supposed to, then make it
available on a limited basis.
Over the next few weeks either Kirk or myself will be posting models,
with the usual ramble as to pedigree and ride.

Well, I'm ready to unleash this critter. Since the Shelter dudes threw in their two cents worth, I've tweaked the template a tad. I'll be making both arctails and swallowtails- as you might predict, the arcs are better at driving a hard line, but the swallows definitely respond better to any tail move.
The overall concept has a pile of potential; I'll be very willing to narrow out the whole program, but it charges as is, with a lotta glide without a lotta length. This is a 5'9; I have four 5'6s on order, and the little details that make a board really work well are falling into place. It's going to be a real gas to
play with the concept:
namely, a real hull-turn
front combined with
the firmness of a twin/fish for tail-weighted moves.
So far, it's doing both well; the front end seems to be pretty dialed. With a lot of options on the rear end
depending on rider preference,and open to be explored, some more fun stuff should show up. But it seems plenty fun as is, right now. Hilbean3K
